Pastor’s Welcome

Pastor’s Welcome

Pastor Anthony’s Year 2020 Message

Our church theme for 2020 is “Home with a Heart.”

These few simple words capture the essence of where our church is poised to head towards in 2020 and beyond.

First of all, we want to be known as a people whose hearts are completely devoted to God and for AMKMC (TRAC) to be a place where God is eagerly welcomed home, just like how young children expectantly await their parents’ return or as a bride eagerly awaits for her bridegroom to appear. This is in line with our long-term vision, which is, “To Be a Methodist Family After God’s Heart.” To be known as someone after God’s heart is the highest praise a Christian can ever receive; King David was described by God Himself as “a man after my own heart” (Acts 13:22b). The chief reason David was so described is because David does everything God wants him to do (Acts 13:22c). Thus, we desire to be a people fully obedient to God. This is our upward call – to love God with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength (Mark 12:30); and to be holy as God is holy (1 Pet 1:15-16).

Second, we hope this theme will inspire us in the way we live out our communal Christian lives. Home – in its ideal state – is a place where we can be fully ourselves, deeply flawed yet deeply loved. Home is where we receive comfort and nourishment for life outside the home. Everyone longs for a place where they can truly belong, especially in a world where people are increasingly isolated. It is our prayer that AMKMC (especially in our cell groups) will be that haven where we can run to in times of struggles, that place where our strengths are celebrated, and that nursery where God’s dreams in us are birthed and nurtured. Thus, we seek to be a people whose hearts are tender towards each other as we comfort, strengthen, and uphold each other in life’s journey. This is our inward call – to love one another as we are loved by God; that is our continuing debt to Christ (Romans 13:8).

Finally, this tender heart towards God and one another must lead to warm hospitality to all who step into AMKMC, regardless of age, race, religion, or social economic status. We further desire AMKMC to be a shining beacon in the larger Ang Mo Kio community. Whether it is giving of free tuition to needy students or spending two hours with an isolated senior, whether the community steps into our doors or we step out towards the community, we want to be known for God’s love flowing out through us. This is our outward call – to love our neighbours as ourselves (Matt 22:39).

Our pulpit in 2020 begins by preaching through the Book of Romans. It is apt, then, that I quote the verses which best encapsulate our church theme for 2020.
9 Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. 10 Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. 11 Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. 12 Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. 13 Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.
(Romans 12:9–13)

Beyond these three simple calls of upward, inward, outward love, I have deliberately left the theme vague so that you might also participate in your own understanding of what the theme means for you. In other words, while God has anointed and appointed me to lead this church and this family, this home is also to be shaped by you. What does “home with a heart” mean for you? How can you make AMKMC a “home with a heart”?

May God be with us as we build Him a Home with a Heart.

BLESSINGS IN CHRIST,
Rev. Anthony Lee
