Pastor’s Welcome

Pastor’s Welcome

Pastor Anthony’s Year 2019 Message

Have you ever wondered why our Sunday gatherings are called worship services?

Well, both the Hebrew word עבד and Greek word λατρειω, from which we the English translation “serve,” include a dimension of worship. In other words, our worship unto God must overflow into service unto others. On that note, it is thus very appropriate that we culminate our 4-year church vision with the call to serve. (This follows our church themes of “Love God” in 2016, “Love People” in 2017, and “Disciple” in 2018.)

As Jesus taught his disciples, the two greatest commandments of Scripture are to love God with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength, and to love our neighbours as ourselves (Luke 10:27). As Christ’s disciples, then, to love people is one indispensable way to express our love for God. To further cement the link between love and discipleship, Jesus explicitly taught, “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another” (John 13:35). In short, to be a true disciple of Jesus Christ is to love God and love people.

Now, love cannot merely be expressed in words; to serve is to love; to love is to serve. As Apostle John taught in 1 John 3:17–18, “If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.”

For 2019, we will provide many opportunities for service both inside and outside of our church. Our goal is for every cell group to serve in at least one area of ministry together. Our prayer is that, by the end of 2019, every worshipper will make service an indispensable part of your Christian discipleship. For unless we serve with our hands and our feet, caring for fellow believers and even for those outside of the family of Christ, our worship and love for God will forever be incomplete.

“Lord, may we not only bow our knees in worship, cause us to arise and serve one another and others. Amen.”
